What Is an Apostille and Why Do You Need It?

An apostille is a certificate attached to official documents to verify their legitimacy for use in foreign countries. For a baby's birth certificate, this means the document will be recognized by authorities outside Poland, such as Indian government offices or embassies.

Without an apostille, your baby's birth certificate may not be accepted for important processes like applying for a passport, registering the child with Indian authorities, or enrolling in schools abroad.

Step 1: Obtain the Original Birth Certificate

Before you can get an apostille, you need the original birth certificate issued by the Polish Civil Registry Office (Urząd Stanu Cywilnego). If your baby was born in Warsaw, you can request this document from the local office where the birth was registered.

• Visit the Civil Registry Office in person or check if you can apply online.

• Bring valid identification (passport or residence card).

• Request a full, official birth certificate (not a copy).
